Suboxone Film is extremely acidic when it dissolves in the mouth. Prior to June 2022, users of Suboxone Film were not warned that they should swish their teeth with water after the Suboxone Film had completely dissolved. Furthermore, Suboxone users weren’t warned that they should wait at least one hour after taking Suboxone Film to brush their teeth. Because Suboxone Film is so acidic, brushing teeth after Suboxone Film dissolves in the mouth, will result in enamel being removed from the teeth. Removing the enamel from a tooth allows bacteria to enter the tooth and eventually the tooth can completely decay. The Suboxone class action lawsuits also allege that the makers of Suboxone should have known that Suboxone Film would cause harmful tooth damage due to its acidity.

In 2019, the United States Department of Justice obtained a $1.4 billion settlement from the makers of Suboxone, because their deceptive marketing practices induced governmental programs, such as Medicaid, to unnecessarily spend billions of dollars on Suboxone Film. Less than a year later, the makers of Suboxone agreed to pay another $600 million to settle Suboxone-related claims with the Department of Justice.

Suboxone Sublingual Film Manufacturer CEO Sentenced to Jail

Suboxone is one of the rare instances when the head of a pharmaceutical company actually goes to jail. In June 2020, the former chief executive officer (CEO) of Indivior PLC, the manufacturer of Suboxone, was sentenced to 6 months in federal prison and ordered to pay a fine of $100,000 and forfeit $500,000. The Suboxone manufacturer’s CEO pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for his role in introducing misbranded Suboxone Film into the interstate market. Furthermore, the company that makes Suboxone pleaded guilty to a felony for false statements related to healthcare matters.
