What is Zantac Used For?
Zantac and similar ranitidine medications were typically prescribed as heartburn medications. Zantac is an H2 blocker which reduces the production of acid in the stomach. Zantac could be prescribed or purchased over the counter in certain doses. The most common dosages of Zantac are 75 and 150 mg tablets, though some people take 300 mg of Zantac per day. Zantac is the 50th most prescribed drug in the United States with about 15 million prescriptions written yearly; this does not include over the counter purchases.
Other Side Effects of Zantac
In addition to the aforementioned cancer link, other serious side effects have been associated with Zantac. These side effects include rhabdomylosis, a musculo-skeletal disease which can lead to kidney damage or failure; chronic kidney disease and kidney failure even without rhabdomylosis; osteoporosis; and even intestinal infections.

The presence of NDMA in Zantac was found to be at extremely elevated levels; an independent lab study found that there was about 3,000 times the daily maximum intake recommended by the FDA in a single Zantac 150 mg tablet. NDMA is associated with a heightened cancer risk due to the fact that it is classified as a probable carcinogen.
