Zantac and Potential Cancer Link
In September of 2019, the FDA announced that they had discovered NDMA (or N-nitrosodimethylamine) present in both the OTC and prescription versions of Zantac, a popular heartburn medication. NDMA is a carcinogenic compound which has been linked to several types of cancer.
This announcement from the FDA came after an independent lab submitted the results of testing to the FDA which indicated extremely elevated levels of NDMA in Zantac and generic ranitidine medications. After the FDA’s statement, some pharmacies pulled Zantac products voluntarily, pending further information. In April of 2020, the FDA announced an immediate recall of all Zantac medications due to the potential for NDMA contamination.
In addition to its association with the development of certain cancers (including liver cancer, kidney cancer, esophageal cancer, and bladder cancer) NDMA is associated with other harmful side-effects. Even short-term exposure to NDMA can lead to liver damage, including liver scarring and fibrosis; whereas long-term exposure can greatly increase the risk for developing tumors, as well as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and pain, reduced liver function, reduced kidney function, reduced lung function and an enlarged liver. Some other side effects associated with Zantac use have included:
- Low blood platelet levels
- Nervous system disorders
- Vitamin B-11 deficiencies
- Skin rashes
- Pneumonia risk
- Hair loss
- Irregular heartbeat
Since 1986, NDMA has been classified as “extremely hazardous”; due to this classification, extensive testing and reporting of potential NDMA amounts is required in order to mitigate the serious risk that NDMA exposure causes. Some of the current lawsuits filed in relation to Zantac argue that the makers of Zantac were aware of potential NDMA contamination but did not disclose this to the public for fear of losing money.
